Member Grievance Procedure

The purpose of the CIL’s Member Grievance Policy/Procedure is to ensure that your rights to quality services from the Center for Independent Living, Inc., are protected.

Procedure

You have the right to appeal a decision or make a complaint about CIL services. You will not be penalized for it. Filing a grievance will not influence future services or your right to fair treatment at CIL. The following procedure is designed to assist you in resolving problems.

  1. Notify the CIL staff member you are having the problem with.
  2. If the problem cannot be resolved, contact that staff member’s supervisor.
(Staff member → Program Manager → Program Director → Executive Director → Board of Directors Chair)
  3. If the problem cannot be resolved, then continue through the supervisor hierarchy. If you would like assistance throughout any part of the grievance procedure, then the CIL’s Director of Operations can provide you with such assistance.

You may also file a complaint with the Client Assistance Program (CAP) provided by the California Department of Rehabilitation. You may file a complaint against any agency receiving Dept. of Rehabilitation funds, including this Independent Living Center. You may file a complaint concurrently with CIL and with CAP. The CAP advocate will investigate concerns. Call 1-800-776-5746 or TTY 1-800-719-5798.

The Center for Independent Living, Inc., has the right to deny services to anyone:

  • Who does not meet program eligibility criteria
  • Whose behavior is disruptive to services and/or CIL staff
  • Who is disrespectful to CIL staff, other CIL members, and/or visitors at the CIL
