Confidentiality Policy
It is our policy at the Center for Independent Living, Inc. (CIL) to keep all member information, written and/or known by staff, confidential to the maximum extent possible.
Procedures
- We will inform all members of our Confidentiality Policy at time of intake. A copy of this written policy can be provided.

Member information will only be shared outside of the agency when a written release of information is signed by the member, except:
- If CIL staff determines that a member poses a threat to their own safety, or to the safety of others, we will notify the proper authorities.
- If demanded by court subpoena, member information will be provided.

Member information will only be accessed within the agency on a need-to-know basis, such as:
- When members are receiving services from more than one CIL staff member.
- When CIL staff must obtain information or expertise from other staff members in order to provide effective services to the member.
- When member behavior poses a threat to the safety of staff or to other members.
- When not in use, physical member files will be kept in locked cabinets in the agency. At no time will cabinets with member files be left unattended and unlocked.
